In A Deeper Kind of Calm: Steadfast Faith in the Midst of Adversity, Linda Dillow helps others get through their “Valley of Weeping” not only with their faith in God intact but with it strengthened. She focuses on four Psalms (77, 46, 63, & 84) as the basis of her book. The lessons taught are about remembering what God has done for us, learning to hide in God’s presence and learning to cling to God in our times of trouble. It includes a guide for a four-week Bible study that could be done alone or with a group.
This book also teaches about recognizing that we all must journey through our trials, but if we trust in God he will direct our steps. She points out that while our problems might be big or small compared to hers or those of other people, we all feel pain and we must all learn to deal with it without being taken over by depression or discouragement. We must learn to turn to Jesus.
I think most women will find at least one or two of the many examples she gives that they relate to. For me personally after reading about the bear getting into Linda’s home it’s hard to be as upset as I once was when a stray cat or opossum finds a way into mine. As I read about her friend Becky being faced with serious illness and family trouble at the same time but still clinging to Jesus my own troubles seem so much smaller and I am greatly encouraged to pray and strengthen my faith in God.
I am still journeying, still learning to turn to God and trust completely when things go wrong. This book has helped me get a few steps further along the path. I would recommend this book to those who want to be able to stand in faith in the midst of life’s trials or for those who are trying to help someone else through a difficult time.
